How to rank in ChatGPT in 2026: 8 steps that get you cited

The loop we run on Patricia, with our own numbers: track the prompts, read what ChatGPT searches, and earn the pages it cites.

A demo AI visibility report in Patricia: competitor agencies ranked by visibility, sentiment and position across 30 buyer prompts and 5 AI engines, with the client agency at 9% visibility and 88% sentiment

What ChatGPT searches before it answers, which pages it cites, and the 8 steps that get your brand into the answer.

To rank in ChatGPT in 2026, work in 8 steps: track the prompts your buyers type (your baseline), read the searches ChatGPT runs (your brief), list the pages it cites (your targets), let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site (your eligibility), publish one answer page per question (the page it quotes), get onto the best-of lists it cites (third-party proof), answer on the Reddit threads that rank (community proof), and re-measure the same prompts by date (the check).

You can't buy a place inside the answer: OpenAI says ads in ChatGPT are labeled as sponsored and do not influence the answers it gives. Every fact below has a date and a source, and each step says where it stops.

Checked in October 2026

We run this loop on Patricia, our AI coworker for agencies, where our own score is 3 out of 100. The data below is ours, from 20 to 27 October 2026.

The 8 steps, one block each

Role: your baseline

Step 1. Track the prompts your buyers type

What to do
Write 10 to 30 questions your buyers would ask, in their words. Include price, alternatives, "is it worth it" and "how do I set it up". For a client, think like their US buyer: "best payroll software for a small restaurant in Texas", not the brand's own slogan. Run each prompt several times across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features, and record who is named, in what position, and which pages are cited.
Why it works
Without a baseline you can't tell a win from noise. From 20 to 27 October 2026, our 10 tracked prompts for Patricia produced 69 answers, measured with our internal AI visibility technology: 20 from Google AI Overviews, 20 from ChatGPT, 10 from Gemini, 10 from Perplexity and 9 from Copilot. Patricia scored 3 out of 100 and was named in 2 of the 69, both times first, and both times in a ChatGPT answer given after it searched the web. When ChatGPT answered without web sources, it named tools like Asana, Trello, Slack, Zapier, HubSpot and Salesforce.
Where it stops
One run proves nothing, since answers change from run to run. Tracking tools also call the model through its API: our internal AI visibility technology ran ChatGPT on gpt-4o-mini, so the ChatGPT app can answer differently.
Time or cost
1 to 2 hours (our estimate). Free by hand; tracking tools charge monthly.
How to check it worked
You have a dated number: the share of answers that name you, your position, and the cited URLs, per engine.
Best for
Every brand. Do it before you write a single page.
Role: your brief

Step 2. Read the searches ChatGPT runs before it answers

What to do
Collect the web searches ChatGPT sends for each prompt (some tracking tools record them as "fan-out queries"). List the facts they ask for, then make sure your pages state those facts in plain words.
Why it works
Per OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search (read 28 October 2026), "ChatGPT search typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" and sends them to search providers. In our window, our internal AI visibility technology recorded 8 ChatGPT searches for our prompts. 6 of the 8 contained "2026", 4 contained "pricing", 3 contained "official", 2 asked for a "free trial" and 2 for "alternatives". Three of them:
  • AI coworker platform free trial agency team plans official pricing 2026
  • AI coworker platform agencies too expensive alternatives AI employee agency alternatives 2026
  • AI coworker software pricing alternatives agencies marketing agency AI agents
A page that says "flexible pricing" loses to one that states "Founding plan, $45 a month per workspace, every seat included" and the year.
Where it stops
In our data only ChatGPT runs came with recorded searches, 8 in a week. For other engines you infer them from the answers.
Time or cost
About 30 minutes per batch of prompts (our estimate).
How to check it worked
Each target page has a checklist of facts taken from the searches: year, price, free start, plan names, alternatives.
Best for
Deciding what each page must say, before you decide how it looks.
Role: your targets

Step 3. List the pages ChatGPT cites

What to do
Export every cited URL from your tracked answers. Sort them into your pages, competitor pages, best-of lists, Reddit threads, videos and social posts. The lists and threads become steps 6 and 7.
Why it works
When ChatGPT searches, it builds the answer from the pages it finds. Across our 69 answers (our internal AI visibility technology, 20 to 27 October 2026), these domains were cited most:
DomainWhat it isCitations
coworker.aiA competitor's pricing, home, product pages and 23 blog posts60
reddit.comThreads in r/agency, r/AI_Agents and similar25
youtube.comVideos21
linkedin.comPosts16
patricia.appOur own pages15
help.gohighlevel.comHighLevel support pages on its AI Employee pricing15
eesel.ai, agenta.ai, agilityportal.io"Best AI coworkers 2026" lists13, 12, 10
facebook.comPosts12
Most of coworker.ai's 23 cited posts are best-of lists, pricing comparisons and "alternatives" pages, the page types the searches in step 2 asked for.
Where it stops
The list changes month to month, and a competitor's blog will rarely add you.
Time or cost
About 1 hour (our estimate).
How to check it worked
You have 5 to 10 third-party URLs worth your effort, each tagged list, thread or video.
Best for
Young brands, who can appear on the pages a leader shares the answer with.
Role: your eligibility

Step 4. Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, and check Bing

What to do
Allow OpenAI's search crawler in robots.txt, then make sure your CDN or firewall doesn't block it:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

Allow the IP ranges OpenAI publishes at openai.com/searchbot.json. Then run a site: search for your domain on Bing and submit missing pages in Bing Webmaster Tools.
Why it works
Per OpenAI's crawler page (read 28 October 2026), sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers", and "it can take ~24 hours from a site's robots.txt update" for OpenAI's systems to adjust. OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are separate settings, so you can allow search and still block training. On Bing: OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers" and links Microsoft's privacy statement among them (read 28 October 2026).
Where it stops
This makes you eligible, nothing more. OpenAI's help page says it plainly: "Placement is not guaranteed." OpenAI doesn't publish how much of ChatGPT search comes from Bing, so treat the Bing check as cheap insurance.
Time or cost
About 30 minutes, free. Then about 24 hours for a robots.txt change to take effect, per OpenAI.
How to check it worked
Your server logs show the OAI-SearchBot user agent fetching pages, and your key pages appear in a Bing site: search.
Best for
Every site, most of all sites behind bot protection.
Role: the page it quotes

Step 5. Publish one answer page per question

What to do
One page per buyer question. Put the question's words and the year in the title, and make the first sentence the answer, with names and roles. Add a "Checked in [month] 2026" line. Give every item the same fields (where it's good, where it stops, price in US$, best for), date and source each number, and close with an FAQ in the words people type.
Why it works
The searches in step 2 ask for exact facts, and a page that states them is easy to quote. Our proof for this shape is a comparison page we studied in October 2026 in a consumer-app niche: no backlinks, cited in most ChatGPT answers we tracked for its topic. On schema, Google's AI features guide (updated 10 December 2025) says there's "no special schema.org structured data that you need to add", and that your structured data should match the visible text.
At BetterPic, our AI headshot company, 2 or 3 Medium articles brought $200K to $300K of revenue in 2025, about 14% of the year. We didn't track AI citations then, so read it as proof that answer pages sell, not as a ChatGPT number.
Where it stops
A new page on a young domain may not rank in the searches ChatGPT sends, and one studied page is one case, not a law. Our own pages were cited 15 times in the window, and Patricia was still named in only 2 of 69 answers.
Time or cost
4 to 8 hours per page, most of it on checking facts (our estimate).
How to check it worked
The page's URL appears in the cited sources for its prompt in the following weeks' runs.
Best for
Questions where answers name no vendor at all. For us that was "is an AI coworker worth it" and "challenges when first setting up an AI coworker", so we wrote is an AI coworker worth it and how to set up an AI coworker.

It researches each topic, drafts from Supy's own sales calls and codebase, scores the draft out of 10, then waits in Slack for a person to publish. It is a blog SEO workflow, not a ChatGPT tracker, but it shows answer pages built on a company's own facts.
Role: third-party proof

Step 6. Get onto the best-of lists ChatGPT already cites

What to do
Take the lists from step 3 and email their authors. Give them what they need to add you in one read: price in US$, how to start free, a screenshot, your true role ("best for X") and one honest line on who you're not for.
Why it works
Lists are where ChatGPT finds brand names for "best" and "alternatives" questions. In our window, three "best AI coworkers 2026" lists were cited 13, 12 and 10 times (eesel.ai, agenta.ai, agilityportal.io). At BetterPic, affiliate articles brought about 20% of revenue, some months $40K to $50K from a few articles (our figures, stated 22 September 2026). Those lists also named us on pages AI engines now read.
Where it stops
You don't control the wording, many authors won't reply, and some ask for a fee. A mention on a list no engine cites does little, so re-check step 3 before you pay for anything.
Time or cost
2 to 4 weeks from first email to a mention (our estimate). Free, or a fee some publishers ask.
How to check it worked
Your name appears on the list, and the list still shows up in the cited sources for your prompts.
Best for
Categories where best-of lists dominate the citations, which is most software and service categories.
Role: community proof

Step 7. Answer on the Reddit threads that rank

What to do
Find Reddit threads that already rank in Google's top 10 for your buyer questions. Reply with a useful answer first, say who you are, follow the subreddit's rules, and leave the link out of your first reply.
Why it works
In a September 2026 study of 384 keywords in Patricia's market, a Reddit thread sat in Google's top 10 on 82% of them (71% on the hard ones). Subreddit size had no link to position (correlation of -0.04). The thread whose title matched the keyword better won 69% of 223 head-to-heads, and comment count was the strongest factor we found. r/Slack, with 36.9K members, held 41 top-10 positions, and 37% of top-10 threads were under 1 year old. Google AI Overviews kept citing Reddit: 4.2% of sources before 8 August 2026 and 4.7% after, on BetterPic's questions. At BetterPic, one Reddit post brought almost $200K in 2025.
Where it stops
ChatGPT itself cut Reddit in some categories. On BetterPic's "headshot" questions (our internal AI visibility technology, US English), reddit.com was ChatGPT's number 1 cited domain before 8 August 2026: 52 of 1,134 sources, 4.6%. From 14 August to 6 September it was 3 of 458, 0.7%. In a consumer-app niche we checked in September 2026, there was no drop: Reddit stayed ChatGPT's second source (15 of 170). Moderators also remove anything that reads as an ad.
Time or cost
20 to 30 minutes per useful reply (our estimate). Free.
How to check it worked
The reply stays up after a week, the thread still ranks, and the thread appears in Google AI Overviews or ChatGPT sources for your prompts.
Best for
Categories where threads rank in Google. Check ChatGPT's own Reddit share in your category by date before you count on it there.
Role: the check

Step 8. Re-measure the same prompts, split by date

What to do
Run the same prompts every week or month. Compare the share of answers that name you, your position and the cited URLs, per engine, split by date. Note which step you shipped in between, so you can tie a change to a cause.
Why it works
Splitting by date is what caught my own mistake. On 11 September 2026 I quoted reddit.com as ChatGPT's number 2 source in our category. The number pooled answers back to October 2025, and 73 of 87 BetterPic answers came from before 8 August. Split by date, the drop in step 7 was plain.
Where it stops
Small samples swing. Our 2 of 69 is a share, and it will move by chance. Watch 4 weeks or more before you call a trend.
Time or cost
About 1 hour a month (our estimate).
How to check it worked
The share of answers naming you rises over several runs, and the cited URLs include your page, a list that names you, or your Reddit reply.
Best for
Everyone. Agencies show it in the client report.

A scheduled task in a demo Patricia workspace: every Monday it checks whether the brand appears in Google's AI Overview for its main keywords, and the recent runs list what was won or lost each week. This one watches AI Overviews; the same weekly rhythm is what step 8 asks for with your ChatGPT prompts.
Our product

Patricia runs steps 1, 2, 3 and 8 for agency clients, and drafts the work for steps 5, 6 and 7. She is an AI coworker for small marketing agencies, in Slack, with Microsoft Teams in beta. Inside the GEO retainer, she measures how often ChatGPT and Google AI name a client against the rivals you pick, drafts page specs, content briefs and roundup outreach, and sends the monthly client report under your agency's name. On Reddit, she scans your subreddits daily and drafts replies by each subreddit's rules.

Where it stops: her AI visibility report covers ChatGPT and Google AI only, not Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot. She never posts or comments on Reddit: a person posts each reply from their own account. Drafts wait for a named yes before they reach a client, with one exception to know: her meeting recap email goes to everyone on the invite by default, and you can narrow it to the team or switch it off. Ask for the date range on every figure in the report.

Cost: the monthly AI visibility report uses about 800 credits per client. The Founding plan is $45 a month per workspace, every seat included, with 20,000 credits included every month; usage beyond that is billed in credits (pricing).

Tactics to skip

  • Buying Reddit upvotes or posting as a fake customer. Reddit's Rule 2 (read 28 October 2026) bans spam and "content manipulation", and Rule 5 says "do not intentionally mislead others". Accounts get suspended and content removed, and a removed thread can't be cited.
  • Mass AI pages with no facts. Google's spam policies (updated 28 August 2026) list "Using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users" as scaled content abuse. Google AI Overviews draw on Google's index, and a thin page gives ChatGPT nothing to quote in the searches of step 2.
  • llms.txt as the only fix. Google's AI features guide says no new "machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI's help page and crawler page (both read 28 October 2026) ask for OAI-SearchBot access, not an llms.txt. OpenAI publishes one for its own docs, so the file is harmless, just not the lever.
  • Buying a ChatGPT ad to get into the answer. OpenAI's ads announcement (updated 11 August 2026) says "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you" and that ads are "clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the organic answer".
  • Ranking yourself first on your own "best of" list. A list that puts its publisher first with no limits reads as an ad (our reasoning, not a published rule). Label your product "our product" and give it a "Where it stops" line, as step 8 does.

Is ranking in ChatGPT different from ranking in Google?

Less than the "LLM SEO" label suggests. LLM SEO, also called GEO or AI visibility, is the work of getting a brand named in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features. You still need a page that answers the question and other sites that name you. Google's AI features guide says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."

Three things change with ChatGPT. It rewrites one question into several specific searches, so a page must carry those exact facts (step 2). It leans on lists and threads (steps 6 and 7). And it answers differently each run, so you measure a share across many answers (step 8). Your Google rank still helps: a page that ranks for ChatGPT's searches is a page it can find.

How we built this guide

FAQ

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

No, not inside the answer. OpenAI says ads in ChatGPT are labeled as sponsored, sit apart from the answer, and do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives (OpenAI, updated 11 August 2026). To get into the answer, get onto the pages ChatGPT reads when it searches.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers?

There's no fixed time. OpenAI says a robots.txt change for OAI-SearchBot takes about 24 hours, but a mention depends on when the cited pages change and whether your page ranks in ChatGPT's searches. Re-run the same prompts weekly and give it 4 weeks or more.

Does schema markup help you rank in ChatGPT?

It helps machines read your page, but it isn't a ranking switch. Google's AI features guide (updated 10 December 2025) says no special schema.org markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and structured data must match the visible text. OpenAI's search guidance asks for OAI-SearchBot access and doesn't mention schema.

Does Reddit still get brands cited by ChatGPT in 2026?

It depends on your category. On BetterPic's headshot questions, ChatGPT citations of reddit.com fell from 4.6% to 0.7% of sources after 8 August 2026. In a consumer-app niche we checked in September 2026, Reddit stayed ChatGPT's second source. Google AI Overviews kept citing Reddit in both. Check your own category, split by date.

Do I need to be indexed in Bing to appear in ChatGPT?

OpenAI doesn't say so in those words. Its help page says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and links Microsoft's privacy statement among them (read 28 October 2026). A Bing site: search and Bing Webmaster Tools cost nothing, so check your key pages are there.

How do I allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt?

Add a block with "User-agent: OAI-SearchBot" and "Allow: /" to your robots.txt, and let OpenAI's published IP ranges through your CDN or firewall. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that a change takes about 24 hours. GPTBot is a separate setting, so you can block training and still allow search.

How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my brand?

Write 10 to 30 prompts your buyers would type, run each several times across assistants, and record whether you are named, in what position, and which pages were cited. Agencies can have Patricia run it monthly per client, and the free AI visibility check on patricia.app/ai-native gives a first reading.
